Local film withdrawn due to embassy’s objection
The Korean Five Nation Fair, part of the annual Korean EBS International Documentary Festival rejected local filmaker Danny Lim’s documentary ‘18?’. This follows disapproval from the Malaysian embassy who reportedly objected to an interview with an ‘anti-government activist’.
The film explores grafitti art in Malaysia and the lack of space for self-expression. Lim said he received news that the embassy disapproved of the film on 3 July. The Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs’s External Information Division said the foreign ministry only gave suggestions when consulted, but that the embassy’s approval is not a prerequisite and it is up to the organizers to follow the recommendation.
She said the embassy found the film “not appropriate for screening and give negative impression of the country”.The embassy has requested the Ministry to send a few other local films for screening selections.
However, Gunny Hyoung, Executive Director for EBS International Documentary Festival 2006 said there were three films including Danny’s and his film was not chosen. Hyoung was also reported today that approval from respective embassy was required for a chosen film as the Five Nation Fair is a collaboration between Korean public tv station EBS, and foreign embassies.
Danny’s film, which won the Malaysian Video Award for documentary and the runner-up for Freedom Film Fest amateur category, has since been replaced by Hisham Abdullah’s Song of Change, a film about Kelantanese traditional musician and story-teller Halim Yazid.
The Centre for Independent Journalism is concerned that Ministry approval for the screening of local films in foreign festivals will close down another avenue for Malaysia’s struggling independent video scene.
“This is a blatant example of censorship, following closely after the banning of Amir Muhammad’s semi-musical documentary The Last Communist,” said Center for Independent Journalism (CIJ) executive director Sonia Randhawa. “We urge the festival to accept submissions based on quality and commitment, rather than succumbing to political pressure.”
